PENG AND HSIEH WIN WOMEN'S DOUBLES

No7 seeds Hsieh Su-Wei and Shuai Peng defeated No5 seeds Daniela Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama in straight sets in Saturday’s final, 7-5, 7-6(5). The Slovak/Japanese pairing of Hantuchova and Sugiyama, who had defeated top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber in the quarter-finals, raced into a 3-0 lead but their China/Taipei opponents soon identified Sugiyama as the slightly weaker link and began targeting her backhand, turning a 2-4 deficit into a 5-4 lead. Hantuchova held serve but Sugiyama was unable to follow suit and Shuai and Su-Wei took the first set 7-5. The second set was another up-and-down affair with two breaks on either side, but Hsieh and Peng were never headed in the eventual tie-break which they won 7-5. They thus secured their second title of the year together after Sydney in January, and their third in total having won in Bali last year.
