PATTAYA, Thailand: Fifth-seeded Peng Shuai of China reached the second round of the Pattaya Open on Monday when Mara Santangelo of Italy retired with an ankle injury despite leading.
Peng won 3-6, 5-2 after Santangelo injured her ankle while attempting to hit a backhand in the third game of the second set. She called for a trainer and completed four more games before retiring.
"I started a bit nervous and tight and got broken one game which cost me the first set," Peng said. "In the second set, I was a bit more relaxed after I talked to my coach."
